The power of networking on Twitter is huge. Twitter is not so much about connecting with your friends, it’s about broadcasting information. Although it doesn’t necessarily take much creativity to create a tweet, only the most creative users actually persist in tweeting every day over a longer time period.

While Facebook is the be-and-and-end-all of social networking, Twitter doesn’t need to feel the pressure in any way. After all, you don’t ‘friend’ people on Twitter, you ‘follow’ them. It’s not social, it’s business. The pure power of networking is presented to us in the three main features of Twitter; retweets, @ replies, and trending topics/hashtags.

Retweeting (RT) is a two-second way of networking aka kissing ass. Find something funny, moving, or just want to tell someone “Hey! I follow you!”? Retweet them. By doing next-to-nothing, you are now on their radar.

@ Replies are basically the next step up from retweeting. In my opinion, this is the best way to network. By asking someone a question or offering your two cents their tweet of the moment, you can almost guarantee you will get a response. Remember, all relationships start small and you will at least get a profile view. (Tip: it is a great idea to plug something they would be interested in a few seconds after an @ reply.)

Finally, trending topics. This is a Twitter newbie’s dream. By offering an opinion on a ‘trending topic’ in 140 characters or less, your profile is opened up to a huge community of people you may not be aware of, yet are essentially your target audience. Those hashtags are key.
